Finding a Endurance Coach

From time to time our company receives emails in regards to our coaching and how we compare to other coaches. Below is a message from Scott.

Scott from Global Bikes:

I am looking for a coach but have not heard of you. how would you compare your coaching to that of brian forbes whose palmares are well known?

Scott:

Hello, I have not meet Brian Forbes except for maybe at the races. I believe each every coach is different and has different coaching philosophies. I have only worked with the some of the best coaches in the world like Max Testa, Dave Brinton, Chris Carmichael, Dean Golich, Craig Griffin, Jim Lehman, as a researcher and on collaborating projects to help certain athletes. Our coaching is sports science based. I use physiology, biomechanics, skills, to educate and train each and every athlete.
I believe a coach is someone who can look into to you and see that athlete you aspire to be. Coaching is a 24/7 job and as coach, I understand that you can’t punch out at 5 or 6 pm and go home. Which is why I make myself available to all my athletes. We build your training programs from scratch based on your goals, field test, and season. Through our company we also offer sports nutrition from one of the top research in sports nutrition Dr Cindy Dallow who is an RD and CSSD. So we not only provide the science based coaching, but science based nutrition as well. Below are some questions that can help me understand your goals and determine the best program to agree with your needs.

1) How many hours/miles have you been training per week for the last 4-6 months?
2) Briefly describe your current training program.
3) What events are you focusing on for this year and next?
4) What is the date of your major goal event? What is your major goal event?
5) What distance are you racing?
6) What is your past competition or participation experience in your sport?
7) How many hours can you train per week?

When looking for a coach it is great to ask questions and interview your coach. Most coaches have either meet at the races or know each other from reputation. To make sure your coach is up to date with the latest research make sure he is USA cycling certified. USA cycling does a background checks to make sure your coach is reliable and responsible. Although have a coaching license does not make you a great coach, but a coaches educational background and experience might. I believe education shows a coach took the initiative to learn on how to be a better coach.
